This is a 45-minute, live, interactive, online virtual tour. Visit the website below to register for and join this tour.

In the late 19th century, Croydon – some 500 kilometres inland from Cairns – was a diverse, bustling town surrounded by satellite gold mining townships. At least of 7,000 people lived here – including members of one of the largest settlements of Chinese in northern Australia. 23,675 kilograms of gold were mined from the fields here over a 35-year period. The gold is gone but heritage buildings and historic artefacts remain.

Croydon is now a tiny town on a popular tourist route, the Savannah Way. On this tour we’ll visit Croydon’s Heritage Precinct. You’ll learn a bit about Croydon as it was and as it is while having a look at the four 19th century buildings that make up Croydon’s Heritage Precinct – the Police Sergeant’s Residence (1897), the Police Station (1896), Croydon Courthouse (1887), and Town Hall (1890). The tour may wander a bit further around town and have a peak at the 1887 Croydon Club Hotel – the last pub standing where once there were dozens.

This tour is being conducted by the Croydon Tourism Officer utilising the HeyGo.com platform.
